Description

Get an introduction to theory and clinical applications of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and other music and imagery techniques from this intensive, 4-day seminar. Gain personal experience with GIM, along with hands-on experiential exercises, demonstrations, and clinical examples. This training is endorsed by the Association for Music and Imagery and qualifies attendees for advanced GIM study.

Objectives: 

1. To identify the definition of GIM as it compares to other forms of guided imagery and guided imagery with music. [CBMT Domain II.A.3.c)d)f),4.e)i).]
2. To identify the therapeutic functions of music, imagery and processing through didactic and experiential learning. [I.B.13.a)c)d), II.5.a)b)g)]
3. To identify the clinical uses and contraindications of GIM. [I.D.1.6.a)d),9,10,15. II.B.2.3.]
4. To demonstrate and identify simple, supportive Focused Music Imagery (FMI) techniques. [II.A.2.g),ac)an)ao)aw)bd) IV.B.4.14.]

 

Schedule:

Monday, November 18
8-8:50am Opening, Introductions, verbal & nonverbal sharing, Overview of the 4 day training including didactic and experiential components. Confidentiality.
10 min. break
9-9:50am Group experiential, brief group experience and processing. History of GIM, Definitions of GIM & Music Imagery(MI), comparisons with other imagery methods including Focused Music Imagery, GIM session elements.
10 min. break
10-10:45am Wheeler: Supportive, Re-educative & Reconstructive GIM & MI Levels.  Triadic relationship between the client, therapist & music applied to GIM. Theory: Bonny’s Cut log diagram. 
15 min. break
11-Noon Authentic Movement: teaching presence with individual and dyad experientials, Choosing Dyad partner, GIM Guiding 101. Directions on how to set up dyad spaces.
Noon-2:30: Lunch
2:30-3:20pm Set up dyad spaces.  Review Guiding 101. Questions. Dyad 1 with short music program, Trainers give Induction, closely observe/supervise dyads and guide back travelers after music ends. 
10 min. break
3:35-4:20pm Processing from Dyad 1, trainers model processing techniques & encourage group feedback. 
15 minute break
4:35-6pm Dyad 2 with same protocol from 2:30 section, Processing, close. Some music listening if time.

Tuesday, November 19
8-8:50am Warm-up.  Questions. Guide Feedback in dyads. Share learning & discussion.
10 minute break.
9-10am Imagery. States of Consciousness. Music Listening & analysis.
20 minute break
10:20-Noon GIM demonstration session set up, description, instructions.  GIM demo, Trainer guides the session.Group discussion & feedback on guiding techniques afterwards, processing of practice client. Choose dyad partners for afternoon.
Noon-2:30: Lunch
2:30-4:30pm Dyad 3 set-up. Guiding 102. Questions. Dyad 3 with full music program. Trainers give Induction, closely observe/supervise dyads and guide back travelers after music ends.  Processing, feedback encouraged from students.
15 minute break  
4:45-6pm Music listening, discussion and analysis of programs used in demo and in dyad sessions.
6-7:30pm Dinner Break
7-8:30pm Music listening continues.

Wednesday, November 20
8-8:50 Warm-up. Questions. Guide feedback in dyads, share learning, discussion.
10 minute break
9-9:50am GIM theory, transpersonal & field theories. Music.
10 minute break
10-10:50am Processing GIM sessions, Music program listening w/diagramming example.
10 minute break
11-noon. Listening -Bonny program music excepts.
Noon-2:30pm Lunch
2:30-4:30pm Dyad 4 set-up. Review Guiding 102. Questions. Dyad 4 with full music program, Processing.
15 minute break  31
4:45 -6pm  Guide feedback and discussion. Music listening if time.

Thursday, November 21
8-8:50am Focused Music Imagery Intro, Supportive Level FMI Basics, FMI diagram
10 minute break
9-9:50am Brief Practice MI talkovers in dyads, MI music structure defined and listening with discussion
10 minute break
10-10:50  More music listening. More talkover practice in dyads with chosen themes and music. Questions. Identify themes from the week's sessions and mandalas. What do they want to bring with them?
10 minute break
11-noon Identify themes from the week's sessions and mandalas. What do they want to bring with them? Closure group experience facilitated by trainer using MI with writing. Group sharing.

Noon to 2pm Lunch
2-3pm Questions. GIM training information and levels of training. Recommended reading and general information, AMI. Suggested education and training for levels of clinical practice. Indications and contraindications.

3-4pm  What students ethically can and cannot do after this training. Populations and situations in which they can do simple, supportive FMI. General closure. CMTE forms and evaluations..
