(Event: PAA 2023 Annual Meeting)

Apr 12, 2023 8:00am - Apr 12, 2023 12:00pm
Session Type: Workshop

Description

The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) is the Census Bureau’s premier source of information for income and program participation in the U.S. This workshop focuses on the latest SIPP data, the 2018 SIPP Panel (covering 2017-2020 calendar years), and its applications for researchers and demographers. It also provides a hands-on introduction to weighting and estimation. This workshop is aimed at researchers of all experience levels: those who have never used SIPP, experienced SIPP data users, and those who simply want to learn more about the survey.

Outcomes

  • Understand the SIPP’s complex sample design.

  • Understand how to use publicly available SIPP data files.

  • Know where to find learning resources to become more familiar with SIPP data and associated data products.

Presenters

  • Holly Fee is a Survey Statistician in the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) Coordination and Outreach Staff at the U.S. Census Bureau. She has worked on the SIPP in a variety of roles for eight years, and her current job responsibilities focus on (1) coordinating SIPP’s public-use dataset, (2) data review and evaluation, and (3) public outreach support. She received her Ph.D. in sociology with a focus on family demography and minor in quantitative methodology from Bowling Green State University.

  • Adam Smith is chief of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) Coordination and Outreach Staff (SCOS) at the U.S. Census Bureau. He and his staff coordinate SIPP’s subject-matter activities related to instrument design, data processing, data review, and data publishing. SCOS also leads SIPP’s public outreach, disclosure protections, and public-use documentation. Previously, Adam served as team lead for labor force content in the American Community Survey (ACS), as well as subject matter expert for assets content in SIPP. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Baylor University and a master’s degree in economics from The George Washington University.

  • Jason M. Fields is the Senior Researcher for Demographic Programs and the Survey of Income and Program Participation. Since March of 2020, Jason has played a lead role in the content and development of the Census Household Pulse Survey and is actively working on the development of the Census Household Panel. In these roles and in his SIPP role, he works to minimize the impact of sources of bias, facilitate analyses, and coordinate research and partnerships. His methodological interests include survey methodology, the integration of administrative and survey data, longitudinal survey design, disclosure avoidance, and promotion of the integration of administrative data and adaptive design into production survey processing. He earned a master’s degree in public health and doctorate in Demography from the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
