The Shoeleather Walking Tour, led by local historian Steve Thornton, is low-tech storytelling in the digital age. It encourages participants to challenge what they know about Hartford’s past and history in general. The walk uncovers the heroic work of ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. Suffragists, abolitionists, labor organizers and others are revealed through their own words. Handouts and ViewMasters help bring their stories to life. As Ma Joad said in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, “How will we know it’s us without our past?” Check out shoeleatherhistoryproject.com for more information.
