Description

IPUMS disseminates data on every single person that appeared in the U.S. Census from 1850 to 1940 (over 650 million records). By attending our workshop you will learn how to work with this massive database to study intergenerational mobility, fertility, mortality, migration, and other life-course transitions, with special focus on managing data, accessing restricted data, and linking records over time. We will provide you with:

  • Strategies for working with very large datasets.
  • A deep understanding of the features and idiosyncrasies of historical census data.
  • Instructions for accessing and linking restricted census data with full names and geographic specification.
  • Direct consultation with data experts on how to use IPUMS data in your research.
