Making self-care a priority in our daily personal and professional lives is generally easier said than done, particularly with the challenges of this past year. Review research and writings by music therapists on burn-out as well as ways to prevent and reduce its negative effects through self-care. Explore a variety of self-care strategies and choose at least one to integrate into your daily life.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify at least one common theme from past research (and their lived experience) on the importance of self-care for music therapists. (CBMT Domain V. A. 2., B. 12.)
  2. Participants will identify one self-care SMART goal that they will incorporate into their daily personal and professional lives. (CBMT Domain V. A. 1., B. 12.)


  • 10 minutes - Welcome/Experiential Mindfulness Exercise;
  • 10 minutes - Musical Introductions/Goals & Objectives;
  • 25 minutes - Individual Reflection and Small/Large Group Sharing ~ Current Level of Burn-Out & Self-Care Practices;
  • 20 minutes - Presentation of Material ~ Research on Self-Care and Burn-Out for Music Therapists;
  • 10 minutes - Presentation of Material ~ You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup;
  • 20 minutes - Break;
  • 65 minutes - Presentation of Material/Experiential Exercises ~ Self-Care Strategies;
  • 10 minutes - Setting & Sharing of SMART Goals;
  • 10 minutes - Break & Course Evaluations
