R. Lessons for Everyone from Hospice Music Therapy

Description

Whatever your population, you can benefit from the many lessons I’ve learned in a decade+ of full-time hospice work. This highly experiential CMTE explores topics like: HOW we do what we do; working with vulnerable clients; the importance of presence, moving toward & giving back; and facing our own mortality.

Objectives:

Obj. #1: Participants will demonstrate an ability to respond musically to highly subtle non-verbal communications from clients, including breath, facial expression, and energy. CBMT Domain II.A.5.a.f.g.q.s.w1.w3.z.aa

Obj. #2: Participants will articulate their own individual, personal barriers to full presence, authenticity, settledness in themselves, and moving toward clients. CBMT Domain II.A.1.b.c.e.f.g

Obj. #3: Participants will articulate the steps of the RAIN process for coping with their own challenging emotions and countertransference in highly charged client situations. CBMT Domain II.A.1.b.c.f.g

Schedule:

20 min             Introductions to each other, set aspirations & intentions for the time, housekeeping, outline of day

Bringing awareness and presence to our work with people who are highly vulnerable or fragile

60 min             Aspects of Awareness: Body, Mind, Emotions, Surroundings, Wheel of Awareness: Identifying our triggers and habits, This section will include interactive experientials based on awareness and presence.

15 min             Break

Working with strong emotions: A process to help ourselves and our clients

60 min             Learn RAIN process for emotions: Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Non-Attachment/Natural Presence/Nourish Self-Compassion

15 min             Break

A Deep Dive into Compassion        

50 min             Really examining compassion and what it means. What are the dimensions and aspects of compassion? Examining: Attention, Empathy, Somatic, Emotional, Cognitive, Self-Other Distinction, Non-Attachment to Outcomes, Learning GRACE process for bringing compassion to clients while caring for ourselves. Examining ideas around burnout, compassion fatigue, and self-care.

Working musically with the ideas we have covered with today

50 min             Choosing music for highly vulnerable and fragile patients/clients.

Responding musically to subtle, non-verbal communication from clients (breath, facial expression, energy, silence)

Closing

20 min             Open discussion from day, closing remarks
