(Event: SMDM 40th Annual Meeting: Montreal, QC, Canada)

Oct 13, 2018 5:00 PM - Oct 13, 2018 9:00 PM
Session Type: Special Events & Add Ons

Description

The overall learning aim for this symposium will be for attendees to better understand Indigenous ways of decision making relevant to health, and to open new paths for future collaborations between Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous peoples, communities, and institutions. Speakers will be members of different Indigenous communities from different nations on Turtle Island (North America; e.g., First Nations, Métis Nation, Inuit, or Native American communities) and Polynesia (specifically, a speaker who is Native Hawai’ian). The symposium is an optional, ticketed event limited to 80 attendees (maximum 30 trainees, 50 or more non-trainees) from outside the community. If all tickets are sold out, a waiting list will be established. Ticket prices are USD$40, with discounted tickets USD$20 for trainees. Tickets include transportation from the hotel by bus to and from Kahnawá:ke, a Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) community located about 30-40 minutes from the SMDM hotel, and a community-catered dinner at the symposium. Ticket prices pay for the costs of the symposium and go to organizations within the community. Note: No alcohol is permitted in the longhouse.
