(Event: SMDM 42nd Annual Meeting: Virtual Meeting)

Oct 13, 2020 1:00PM - Oct 13, 2020 4:00PM
Session Type: Short Course- PM 1/2 Day

Description
Background
Reading and evaluating a meta-analysis is a skill most should have in the field of evidence-based medicine and medical decision making; however, the ability to do so is strengthened not only by understanding and interpreting checklists, but by demonstrating scientific integrity through the knowledge and experience conducting these studies. There are nuances in the conduct of systematic reviews and meta-analysis that can affect the results and their interpretation. There is a need for more individuals to have not only the basic skills to take on these projects, but awareness of to conduct them with accuracy using strong, reproducible research methods. The key skills to understand and apply include selecting fixed effects or random effects models, assessment of heterogeneity and publication bias and the role of sensitivity analyses. This course will support the furthering of these skills so that attendees are confident in proceeding to develop such studies on their own.

Format Requirements
This will be a lecture-based course, with interactive aspects. All participants are requested to bring a laptop or similar computer to practice literature searching and strategy development. Internet access will be needed to apply the analytical methods in this course as well. Examples and materials for class will be distributed to all participants in advance, and students will be asked to download software for practice exercises before attendance
Description & Objectives
This is a beginner-level course for individuals without experience conducting systematic reviews or meta-analysis to gain hands-on skills and knowledge from the perspective of the conduct of this research. The learning objectives are as follows:

◦To understand the role and value of systematic reviews and when a meta-analysis should be considered.

◦To learn the steps in developing a meta-analysis, including hypothesis generation, developing eligibility criteria and a search strategy, screening and evaluation of references, data extraction and validation

◦To learn how to develop an analysis plan, including determining the outcome and effect measure to be used, selecting between fixed and random effects models, assessing heterogeneity, bias and study quality

◦To review the required elements for publication of a meta-analysis.

◦To identify key areas of potential error.

◦To practice key steps in the conduct of these studies, including writing and running systematic review search strategies, the role of documentation and recordkeeping through hands-on examples, and practicing analyses using available software resources.

◦To review the PRISMA guidelines and understand how the topics covered in the course are translated to study publication.
