From Investigation to Appeal:  AAA-CPA is Going to Court – and You Will Be The Winner!

Join us for this once in a lifetime, private, in-depth tour of both federal courts housed across the street from the Hilton.  We will start our day at the U.S. District Court with a behind-the-scenes tour of the processing of a federal criminal tax prosecution from investigation through appeal. Meet with a special agent of the IRS and an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) as they review their considerations in bringing a case before a federal grand jury.  Sit in the grand jury room, as the AUSA and others show us the procedures in securing a true bill of indictment, and how the US Marshal secures the Defendant for arraignment. Hear a U.S. Magistrate Judge outline the arraignment procedures, and review the roles of Pre-Trial Services in this process. In the afternoon, at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit we will learn how to appeal a case. Law clerks, bailiffs, and other Court personnel will address proper preparation, courtroom procedure, tips for success, and other matters to make you oral argument a winning one.

A Day with The National Underwriter Company

Tax Traps in Annuity Planning: What you don’t know can hurt your client (and you)
John L. Olsen, didn’t just write the book on the subject—he wrote five, with a sixth coming.  Along with co-author Michael E. Kitces, he authored National Underwriter’s The Advisor’s Guide to Annuities, and John is “the guy” regarding this unique product.

Social Security Planning:  It’s More Complicated Than You Might Think
Marc Kiner, CPA, is part owner and President of Premier Social Security Consulting, a lead editor of National Underwriter’s 2016 Social Security & Medicare Facts, and has developed the National Social Security Advisor certification program.  He’ll help us get social security planning right for our clients (and for ourselves).

Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Cases: Does It Really Take A Sledgehammer For Our Government To Make Its Point?
William Byrnes, co-author of NU’s highly acclaimed Tax Facts, has created the nation’s first online ABA accredited LLM program and is currently a professor at the Texas A & M School of Law.  He also wrote the book on the subject as he is the lead author of Money Laundering, Asset Forfeiture & Recovery, and Compliance—A Global Guide.

Navigating Your Way through Healthcare Reform and Changes to the Affordable Care Act
Michael Thomas, J.D., responsible for the writing and editorial process for NU’s 2017 edition of Healthcare Reform Facts as well as the developer of the NUPro Healthcare Reform online service, will lead us through the changing and evolving state of healthcare reform.

Essential Estate Planning and Cyber Security

Just the Facts Ma’am
Our morning session begins with a review of fact-gathering essential in the estate planning process.  Our friends at National Underwriters will lead a discussion with a Cincinnati area estate planning attorney and a representative from the insurance industry to help improve our fact gathering techniques so as to help insure that that which we prepare is that which best serves the client.

A Review of the Basics
A Cincinnati area attorney will review with us a basic will, a basic trust, durable powers of attorney for health care, a basic A-B trust with an eye toward “best practices” for all these documents as well as suggestions as to how best to improve your essential estate planning.

Cyber-Security with US Bank
US Bank will review with us cyber-security issues, and what we can do to enhance our own cyber-security systems.  US Bank will also discuss its cyber-security system, enhancements made to it, and conclude the day with a tour of its updated cyber-security facility.  It promises to be an afternoon of us feeling, well, a bit more secure.

Court Sponsored Protection Orders: Do They Really Protect Victims or are They Merely Pieces of Paper?

Maria L. McBride, Magistrate in the Butler County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division, leads a discussion along with Retired Magistrate Judge L. Mari Taoka, representatives from Pro Seniors, Inc. and Women Helping Women to deliberate the benefits and effectiveness of court sponsored protective orders and other legal remedies in an effort to help curb the ever-growing national epidemic of domestic violence.

Is the tax paying public well-served here, or it there a better way?
