Speaker Information

William S. Meyer, MSW, is the Director of Training for the Department of Social Work and is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Ob/Gyn at Duke University Medical Center. Bill has been a supervisor and team leader of 3rd year psychiatry residents for over 25 years. 


He is a past-president of the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and is a former Secretary of the National Academies of Practice.  He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas and he holds faculty appointments at The University of North Carolina and Smith College schools of social work.  He has lectured and written extensively on mental health related topics and he is on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Social Work.


He is the recipient of numerous awards, including, in 1999, “The Heart of Social Work Award” received at the Council On Social Work Education, and, in 2005, the Edith Sabshin Award for teaching, from the American Psychoanalytic Association.  He is the 2010 recipient of the Day-Garrett Award from Smith College and the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work. In 2010, he was a recipient of Duke’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award for exceptional leadership and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion within the Duke community.

 

 

J. Patrick Slifka, LCSW, has provided mental health and addiction treatment in the state of Virginia for over 28 years.  His clinical experience includes the delivery of dual diagnosis services in residential, outpatient and community-based settings.  Currently he is the Director of Training for the National Counseling Group, Inc. (NCG) and is the lead internal investigator and senior clinical consultant for the agency. 


Mr. Slifka received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Hampden-Sydney College in 1987 and a Master of Social Work Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998.  Mr. Slifka has also received a significant amount of post-graduate training on dual diagnosis treatment, sex offender treatment, motivational interviewing, clinical supervision, inhalant abuse, and professional leadership development. 


He has conducted over 300 statewide trainings to more than 4000 public and private mental health, substance abuse, and criminal justice professionals and is part of NASW-VA’s professional training team. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for Chesterfield County’s Substance Abuse Free Environment (SAFE) and is the past Chairman for the SAFE’s Inhalant and PULP (Proper Use of Legal Products) Task Forces.
