Merchandise Description

This video (.wmv format), recorded on 10/07/14, covers "Stormwater Management Solutions for Pervious Concrete and Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements ".

  • David Smith, Technical Director, The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI)

  • Robert Rodden, P.E., Senior Director— Pavement Technology, American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA)

The American Concrete Pavement Association and the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute are pleased to present this two-part program that takes the mystery out of building pervious concrete pavements and permeable interlocking concrete pavement systems (PICP).

The program will focus on construction aspects of both technologies and includes recent project examples for both systems.  The program is well-suited for contractors, agencies and owners, consultants, and others with an interest in these technologies, which provide both sustainability benefits, as well as performance features and benefits compared to other systems.  Both presentations are geared toward contractors, specifiers, and consultants new to one or both of the technologies.

Learning Objectives and Presentation Overviews

The learning objective is to present basic to intermediate-level information, all with the aim of facilitating the use of pervious concrete pavements and PICP, whether in tandem or separately.

ICPI’s David Smith will present information about the essentials of PICP.  His presentation will be focused on construction of PICP, equipment requirements, man hour requirements, and casebook examples of where and how PICP isused in residential, commercial, and municipal applications, all of which help reduce stormwater runoff and pollutants.

ACPA’s Robert Rodden will cover materials, details for construction, as well as maintenance and preservation of pervious concrete pavement systems.   He also will present exemplary projects that demonstrate best practices and potential applications for this versatile pavement system.

About the Underlying Technologies

Both PICP and pervious concrete systems may be used as key strategies in sustainable construction for stormwater management, as they can help reduce the need for detention and retention basins/ponds, bioswales, filtration strips, vegetation, and other practices.  In some applications, pervious/permeable pavement can completely replace these stormwater management approaches, thereby allowing more area to be developed.
