This video (.wmv format), recorded on 12/10/13, covers "Straight Facts About Precast Concrete Pavement Systems (Part 3 of 5): Designing and Putting Together a Jointed Precast Concrete Pavement Project".

  • Mark B. Snyder, Ph.D., P.E., Consultant, and President, International Society of Concrete Pavements (ISCP)
  • Peter Smith, P.E., Vice President, Market Development and Product Engineering at The Fort Miller Co., Inc.
  • Steven L. Gillen, Materials Manager, Illinois Tollway

The National Precast Concrete Association and the American Concrete Pavement Association have teamed up to present this, the third part of our five-part series on the straight facts about jointed precast concrete pavement systems.

This video is the third installment in our “Straight Facts” series on precast concrete pavement systems. Our two previous sessions, “Introduction to the Basics of Jointed Precast Concrete Pavement” and “An Owner and Designer’s Guide to Using Jointed Precast Concrete Pavement Systems,” covered basic- to intermediate-level information about these practical, versatile systems.

“Designing and Putting Together a Jointed Precast Concrete Pavement Project” will feature presentations by experts, who will present practical information of value to owner/agencies, designers, program managers and others with an interest in  precast concrete pavement systems.  Our program will address:

  • “Litmus tests” for using precast pavement on the project
  • “Feasibility” of using precast pavement for a particular project
  • Development of a realistic budget and project time line
  • Structural design considerations
  • Geometric design considerations and who’s responsible for performing it
  • Developing coherent specifications
  • What the plans need to include for different types of precast pavement projects
  • Inspection requirements and acceptance criteria for the project
  • Logistical concerns for placement
  • Critical existing conditions affecting design

As a bonus, Mr. Steve Gillen of the Illinois Tollway presents an owner’s perspective on the design and construction of precast pavements for urban roadways.   The Illinois Tollway has a well-deserved reputation of being forward-thinking and innovative.
