Program Description
A panel of health information professionals will describe operational challenges and best practices identified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hot topics include disaster preparedness for HIM professionals, transitioning to a remote workforce, patient access requests for test results, handling subpoenas (when social distancing methods are put in place), patient portals, workflow challenges, and more. Responses to pre-submitted questions will be provided along with the opportunity to pose your own questions and hear answers from the esteemed panel members.

Guadalupe “Lupe” Avila
Manager, Release of Information, UCLA Medical Center

Guadalupe “Lupe” Avila has been an integral member of the HIMS department for over sixteen years, having worked in various positions including data integrity, HIMS operations where she addressed eMPI, patient amendment requests and record storage and management functions and most recently as manager of release of information. Lupe has a bachelor’s in degree sociology and is completing her health information management course work in order to sit for the RHIT certification.

Kristin Bumroongchart, MPH, RHIA, CHPS
Manager, Health Information Management, Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers

Kristin Bumroongchart has worked in the HIM field for almost 25 years, primarily focused on health information technology, release of information, and ambulatory care. Her areas of responsibility include oversight of release of information for four acute care and three specialty care hospitals in addition to HIM operations at a 600+ provider multi-specialty medical group. She has a master’s in public health, with an emphasis in health management and policy, and is passionate about creating meaningful and positive health care experiences.

Diane Premeau, MBA, RHIA, CHP

Diane is an HIM professional with over 20 years of experience and has worked in a variety of health care industries including acute, long term and mental health. She has been a consultant in some interesting environments including prisons, jails, rehabilitation hospitals, multi-campus systems, and continues as a federal court appointed medical record expert. Diane has an MBA from Stephens College in Columbia Missouri and bachelor degrees in psychology and sociology from University of California, Santa Barbara.

Vivian Thomas travels the state to validate state and federal regulation compliance of licensed health facilities. A UCLA School of Public Health graduate, Vivian has worked as a HIM director in hospitals, quality assurance expert, consultant to health networks, and HIT program instructor. She also took career turns as a customer service manager for a major airline and as a mortgage lending manager for a national credit union. She was chosen California Department of Public Health P.H.A.M.E. awardee in leadership in 2018 and is thrilled to serve as a CHIA Board of Director in 2019-2021.

Wanda Ziemba, EJD, MFA, RHIT, CCS, CHC, CHCO/CHCC, CPC
Healthcare Compliance Consultant and Educator

Wanda Ziemba has been involved in the health care arena for over 30 years and is currently the HIT Program Director at City College of San Francisco and teaches HIM courses at Santa Barbara City College. She graduated from Concord Law School in December 2010, receiving an Executive Juris Doctorate in Health Law. She has extensive legal training in health care issues and experience serving as a liaison between health care organizations and regulatory bodies, which provided her with a sound foundation for negotiating complex health care delivery and reimbursement issues.
