The ICD-10-CM/PCS classification system is built upon many of the same conventions and guidelines as ICD-9-CM. The ICD-10-CM/PCS classification system is built upon many of the same conventions and guidelines as ICD-9-CM. However, there are several differences in coding ICD-10-CM that must be understood and applied correctly to ensure coding accuracy. To prepare for ICD-10 implementation, it is important for the coding professional to understand changes to coding guidelines and code families within the code set chapters.


The ICD-10-CM code set has fundamental changes in structure and concepts that make it very different from ICD-9-CM. Within each chapter of ICD-10-CM are some key attributes that help the coding professional enhance their coding skills. Understanding the conventions and guidelines is essential to successful coding. The conventions and guidelines are the foundation for accurate code assignment. Within ICD-10 there have been enhancements to the clinical code descriptions that the coding professional must clearly understand and utilize. Each chapter within ICD-10-CM has its own unique guidelines and instructions that provide opportunities to gain further knowledge and understanding. A review of each of the 21 chapters within ICD-10 will help provide greater familiarity in preparation for the October 1, 2015 implementation date.
