All information-intensive industries discover that adoption of IT brings with it the need to formalize the governance of data and information. EHR adoption and the growing uses for information means that information governance (IG) is now getting much needed attention by health care organizations.
There are three drivers for formalizing IG:
• The complexity of electronic information, at once more accessible and vulnerable
• The need for explicit and transparent practices to mitigate risks and advance trust
• The changing stakeholder roles and relationships regarding information, most importantly the greater engagement of the patient.
IG is not new to health care and certainly not new to HIM. HIM has been advocating for managing information according to principles of IG for many decades. What is new is the need to formalize IG practices across the health care enterprise and to put IG oversight mechanisms in place.
This webinar introduces practical ways of thinking and talking about IG and promoting it in your organization. It focuses on HIM functions that are integral to IG and describes use cases illustrating how HIM professionals are advancing IG everyday through effective information management.

At the conclusion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
• Distinguish information governance (IG) from enterprise information management (EIM)
• Describe the building blocks of EIM and their component functions
• Link everyday HIM functions to EIM
• Discuss ways to build the case and advance EIM and IG in your organization
