This session will provide an introduction to the Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report, also known as PEPPER. It will review the history of PEPPER, the target areas and how they were identified for inclusion, and a brief review of the types of reports in the PEPPER and how they can be interpreted.
PEPPER is a free report available to hospitals through a contract with CMS as an educational tool to support hospitals' efforts to proactively identify and prevent improper Medicare payments by supporting the auditing and monitoring component of a compliance program. PEPPER is designed to identify potential coding/billing errors as well as concerns related to unnecessary admissions/care. As regulatory efforts increase, hospitals can use the PEPPER to compare their billing statistics in areas identified as "at risk" for improper Medicare payments and consider whether they should audit a sample of medical records.
