Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL). She is the Co-founder of HorseWork Education and the Director of Education at Strides to Success, in Plainfield, IN; she also runs an online Therapeutic Riding apprentice program. She is a PhD student and lecturer at Indiana University whose mission is to help support the EAAT industry through research, training and resource development.
Debbie and Blair are the authors of, EAL: Looking Back and Looking Forward, an article in the Spring 2018 issue of PATH Intl. Strides.
EAL is more of a movement that emerged alongside therapeutic riding as the emphasis shifted from learning horsemanship and riding skills to interacting with horses to learn about relationship and life skills. Increasing numbers of professionals are recognizing the broad scope of benefits horses have to offer those in need within our communities. These professionals are helping participants learn about life, relationships and themselves in face-to-face encounters with horses instead of imparting horsemanship lessons from their backs. As a profession, EAL is just beginning to uncover the multitude of benefits from being in relationship with horses, and it is in that pursuit that EAL is emerging as the fastest-growing segment within the equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) industry.
