Join the EAL Celebration!
Lissa Lutz earned her MD, training in pediatrics, as well as an MPH in maternal and child health. She is also a PATH Intl. Certified Advanced Instructor, Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning, and mentor. Lissa has been active in EAAT for more than 30 years with the PATH Intl. Premier Accredited NC Therapeutic Riding Center. Like many others in the therapeutic riding industry, Lissa recognized the potential reach of equine interactions beyond riding skills and has pursued her interests in both equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) and equine-assisted learning (EAL). She joined Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC, a faith-based program that pairs adolescent girls identified as at-risk with rescued horses to promote transformational life changes. The Riding Academy is a long-term holistic approach that combines EAL, EFP, academic support, vocational training and mentorship for girls with a variety of significant risk factors.
Lissa has been actively involved in leading Corral’s Join the Herd, a short-term equine-based program that initially served as a feeder program for the Riding Academy. As the Riding Academy remains near capacity, Join the Herd has evolved into a nine-week stand-alone curriculum that focuses on building healthy relationship skills using a model of equine-assisted learning with therapeutic support. As part of the Summer EAL Celebration, Lissa will discuss the model, curriculum, goals and outcome measures that Join the Herd employs. She will also share anecdotal evidence of how skills gained through experiences in Join the Herd have been applied in “real world” situations and may ultimately be a protective factor for the at-risk population this program serves.
