Abstract:
This session will provide a more in-depth discussion about the three pillars for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) High Reliability Organizations (HROs) and provide a forum to discuss strong practices implemented at several VA facilities. Dr. Gerard Cox, Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Quality and Patient Safety and national co-leader of VHAs HRO initiative, will act as the facilitator. Topics covered in this session will include leadership commitment, continuous process improvement, and culture of safety. A brief overview of each pillar will be presented, followed by best practices from the field that best reinforce one or more of the pillars. After the pillars and best practices have been presented, a question-and-answer period will follow

- Ability to describe the VHA three pillars and impacts of each in an HRO
- Recognizing the impact that the HRO pillars can have in a health care organization
- Applying the HRO pillars within a medical practice as a systematic approach toward health care
