About the Editors:
William E. Mitch, MD is the Gordon A. Cain Chair in Nephrology and the Director of the Division of Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) and a Professor of Medicine at the Selzman Institute for Kidney Health (Houston, Texas). He has extensive clinical experience, including faculty positions at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Emory University School of Medicine, and the University of Texas Medical Branch. He was trained in clinical research as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD) and achieved many awards, including the Robert Herman Award (American Society of Nutrition, 1997); the Mary Jane Kugel Award (JDRF, 1999); the David M. Hume Award (National Kidney Foundation, 2001); the John P. Peters Award (American Society of Nutrition, 2009); and the Medal of Excellence Award (American Association of Kidney Patients, 2017). Dr. Mitch also received a Merit Award from the NIH-NIDDK and has served on the NIDDK Advisory Council. His research focuses on new methods to improve the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic consequences of chronic kidney disease.
Talat Alp Ikizler, MD is Director of the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine and the Catherine McLaughlin Hakim Chair in Vascular Biology and a Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN). The research lab that he oversees studies the mechanisms by which kidney disease patients are predisposed to adverse outcomes and tests novel interventions designed to counteract or ameliorate these factors. Of particular interest to Dr. Ikizler, is the nutritional and metabolic aspects of kidney disease.
