This book is well-priced and is a recommended addition to any library collection on eating disorders, offering an approach that complements existing practice. The authors review relevant medical conditions and the basis for the “Plate-by-Plate Approach”. The topic is broken down into very understandable sections, including managing realistic child responses and guiding the route to normal eating. The practical tips and color plates and other illustrations are very useful for patient education. Although written for parents, the book is also of value for dietetic internships and for education of professionals providing care to this challenging population.
About the Authors
Wendy Sterling MS, RD, CSSD, CEDRD-S is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian, an Approved Supervisor through the International Eating Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She is in private practice in Menlo Park and Los Altos, California and serves as team nutritionist for the Oakland Athletics since 2016. Ms. Sterling worked for The Healthy Teen Project and provided nutrition counseling to children and adolescents in the Eating Disorders Center at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. Her research on osteoporosis, menstruation, and metabolism is published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders and the Journal of Adolescent Health and her work with the Plate-by-Plate Approach is published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received her B.S. in dietetics/nutritional sciences from Cornell University and earned her Master’s Degree in Nutrition Education at Teacher’s College at Columbia University where she also completed her dietetic internship.
Casey Crosbie, RD, CSSD is a Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She is Director of Nutritional Services for the Healthy Teen Project (Los Altos, CA). Ms. Crosbie previously served as lead dietitian for the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Comprehensive Care Program for Eating Disorders (Stanford Children’s Health). She has expertise in refeeding syndrome in adolescents with eating disorders and has published in ASPEN’s Nutrition in Clinical Practice, in the Journal of Adolescent Health and co-authored an article on the Plate-by-Plate Approach in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received her B.S. in food science and nutrition from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and completed her dietetic internship at UC Davis Medical Center.
