Digital health information has become abundant due to the conversion from paper to electronic health records (EHRs). In addition to EHRs, more data is being captured by remote monitoring devices, personal health records, and mobile apps, to name a few. Consumerism in health care is growing at a rapid pace due to high deductibles and more ways to obtain care.
Health care consumers are judicious about spending and even more selective about where they spend their dollars. Do consumers (patients) really want Uberized health care? The health care industry’s role is changing and must adapt to this new dynamic viewing the patient as a “consumer”. Historically, health care facilities have paid very little attention to customer service; when excellent customer service is the expectation in other industries. Consumers are now expecting the same from health care providers. The consumer will be the primary driver of change in the shift from disease care to wellness care.
HIM professionals play a pivotal role in defining and maintaining the patient’s health information. Governing this health information for better health is key and must be guided by a strategy and a purpose. This presentation will uncover why the patient should be viewed as a hospital’s best customer and highlight:
• An understanding of how health information creates the profiles of the three types of health care consumers and why complete and accurate information is key;
• What consumers expect and demand from their health care providers;
• How to measure whether your hospital or clinic meets the new consumer needs;
• Why a better consumer patient experience will make you more competitive.
