Big changes are coming for long term care (LTC) in 2019, including the resource utilization group (RUG) reimbursement system being replaced by the patient-driven payment model (PDPM). ICD-10 will take the starring role in categorizing the patient into one of ten clinical categories, which determine payment rates. 25,000 ICD-10 codes will be rejected if reported under PDPM. This presentation will review PDPM and how ICD-10 drives the clinical category process. Participants will understand:
- How ICD-10 affects PDPM
- Specific examples of codes that will be rejected
- Specific examples of codes that will be accepted
- How to get ready for October 1, 2019 PDPM implementation

Bill started in the HIM field in 1990. He graduated from Western Governors University in 2018 with a bachelor’s in health informatics and earned his RHIA in October of 2018. He has worked in several capacities and venues with many years of HIM experience as a supervisor, director, consultant, as well as subject matter expert to the head of IT for the California prison system.
As an HIM consultant, Bill drove 110,000 miles in eight years consulting to LTC facilities across California. He assessed HIM systems and documentation issues and served as a “HIM personal trainer” to HIM staff, and fielded questions related to release of information, ICD9/10, coding, HIM department issues and survey trends.
Bill has been the President of the Sacramento Valley Health Information Association (SVHIA) for two terms and was the SVHIA Education Chair from 2011 to 2014. Bill has served as Chair of the CHIA Webinar Committee, as well as CHIA’s Legislation Committee.
