Session Description: This session will explore what it takes to build an All-Star team from the complete interviewing process and potential team member expectations, to developing staff to move up the management line-up, and what happens when you’re on the team but aren’t getting off the bench!

Learning Objectives
Participants Will:

  • Learn what managers are looking for from how you dress to how you present yourself, and discuss pre- and post- preparation and follow up to interviews. 
  • Participants will discuss how to actively develop knowledge and experience as well as staff development through mentoring and leadership assistance.
  • Participants will discuss and learn how to move up from inside the organization if your first attempts have failed.                                 

Speaker Info:

Joe Abel, CPRP
Joe Abel has been in the parks and recreation profession for over 32 years.  His experience ranges from managing athletics, pools, and community centers to a department that is made up of Libraries, Extension, Natural Lands, Trails, and Parks. His professional experience began in his home state of West Virginia and has continued for the past 30 years in Florida. Currently he serves as the Interim Deputy County Manager for Seminole County.  Joe has served his profession through leadership positions with the West Virginia Recreation and Park Association, the Florida Recreation and Park Association, and the National Recreation and Park Association.  Joe has served as the President of the FRPA, on the Board of Trustees and Executive Board of the NRPA, and as a Board member of the FRPA Foundation.  Joe’s desire for the parks and recreation profession is to see the profession’s focus transition from just delivering programs and facilities to being about measuring the outcomes of community, health and wellness, economic impact, and conservation.
