Distinguishing Ourselves: Preserving the Past and Preparing for the Future

MOEF Launches D.O. Campaign
The Maine Osteopathic Educational Foundation (MOEF) is poised to build on its distinguished history in Maine through a focus on education, advocacy and scholarship.  The Distinguishing Ourselves (D.O.) Campaign will expand resources for professional development of our membership, increase awareness of the value of osteopathic medicine, and support DO’s of the future.  Support of the D.O. Campaign will allow the MOEF to:

h Recruit national and international caliber speakers to address osteopathic principles and philosophy at continuing medical education conferences - This speaker would be a named lecturer, serve in a keynote capacity, and will continue to keep the focus on the distinctive approach of osteopathic medicine. Preserving the roots of osteopathic medicine is important and re-igniting physicians’ passion about their profession is key to protecting its distinctiveness for the future.

h Implement a public education and awareness campaign to promote osteopathic medicine - One out of every 4 rural physicians in Maine is a D.O., but most patients don’t know the difference between an MD and D.O. We will develop targeted messages to help spread the word about the positive impact of osteopathic medicine in Maine. With a focus on prevention, we will also blend in public health messaging with promotion of osteopathic medicine to have a direct impact on the health and well-being of Maine residents.

h Provide scholarship support for Maine residents attending Maine’s medical school, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine -The MOEF currently supports student scholarships at UNECOM and with additional resources we will expand our impact and create a named scholarship(s) so as to further promote Maine residents, attending medical school in Maine and encourage them to stay and practice in the State.

Campaign Goals
The Distinguishing Ourselves Campaign Committee has set a goal to raise $250,000 by 2015. Several generous leadership gifts have already been pledged to help us reach this goal.  The success of this initiative will allow us to take important steps toward furthering professional development of our members; promoting our profession throughout the State of Maine; and supporting students who are pursuing a career in osteopathic medicine.

Why Give?
A donation to the MOEF helps you give a gift that will have an impact for generations to come. The fund will create an endowment that allows individual gifts to be combined to have the greatest impact on our efforts to protect and promote osteopathic medicine.  Health care is an ever-changing landscape. Osteopathic medicine needs to be front and center, to have a voice at the table and a hand in the process of shaping the future of medicine in Maine. With the generous contributions of members, the Distinguishing Ourselves Campaign will create greater awareness of osteopathic medicine, protect the rich heritage of the profession, assist practicing D.O.s with  continuing medical education and keep alive our passion for osteopathic principles and philosophy and help instill it in future generations of D.O.s.

Why Now?
We need your help today! Please consider making a three-year pledge to the D.O. Campaign by completing the enclosed pledge card.  Your gift will have an immediate impact. All donations are greatly appreciated.  Your generous gift will be used to support activities that further the mission of the foundation; education, public health and promotion of osteopathic medicine.

Ways to Give
Gifts of cash and stock are most welcome.  If you are interested in making a gift of life insurance, a gift annuity or other planned gift, please contact the Maine Osteopathic Educational Foundation at 207-623-1101. A long-term goal of the D.O. Campaign is to significantly grow the MOEF fund to allow us to realize all of our goals for professional education, promotion of osteopathic medicine and increasing scholarship support for DO students.
