All forms of psychiatric disorder including behavior problems are occuring in the aging and elderly mentally retarded. Psychopharmacotherapy is the major treatment intervention in many cases and a valuable adjunct in others. Success depends upon accurate diagnosis, careful drug selection, a systematic approach to prescribing and careful monitoring. The reported high incidence of over prescribing with tranquillizing medication requires attention.
