Merchandise Description

Jarrett Barnhill MD DFAPA, FAACAP, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, NC

The differential diagnosis of psychotic disorders hinges on the presence of bizarre behavior, delusions and hallucinations and severe occupational or social impairments. Their presence is not specific to any specific psychiatric diagnosis. Among individuals with IDD, the list of factors contributing to such symptoms is extensive. Depending on the level of ID the boundaries between schizophrenia, psychotic mood disorders, dementia/delirium and other medical/neurological disorders require careful consideration. Treatment should be adapted to underlying etiology.
