The implementation of Medicaid Managed Care presents challenges and opportunities for individuals dually diagnosed with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses. Under the new managed care initiative, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) will bear the responsibility for developing a network of acute health and behavioral healthcare services. If the managed care plan is designed and implemented in a manner that stimulates the development of new specialized programming, treatment options for the DO/MI population could increase. New programs funded by the Division of Developmental Disabilities and the Division of Mental Health SeNces can be coordinated with the HMO services to form a comprehensive treatment, case management and crisis interwntion system. The purpose of this workshop is to assist providers and other consumer advocates in gaining an understanding of the issues arising from the Medicaid Managed Care system.
