There are deeply rooted historical differences between the genetics model of mental retardation and the philosophies embraced by non-medical workers in the mental retardation field. These contrasts have an important impact on the genetic diagnostic process and on mental retardation research. Forging new alliances between these fields will foster cross-fertilization and chart new directions for research and intervention.
