When clients with a dual diagnosis go into crisis, they may visit their local hospital emergency department, which can be a very stressful experience. This presentation reviews some research on the crisis and ER experience from the perspective of clients, caregivers, and hospital staff. Four case vignettes that highlight the issues identified in the study are reviewed. In the second half of the presentation, tools are presented that clinicians can use to help clients and caregivers prepare for future ER experiences.
