The unique profile of the developmentally disabled, psychiatrically impaired substance abuser often results in their limited success in traditional 12-step programs. Behavior is misinterpreted; cognitive limitations misunderstood. This presentation examines a successful treatment program situated in a mental health clinic which provides the consumer with a linkage to 12-step programs. Treatment utilizes a multiaxial approach, incorporating modified recovery and relapse techniques. Strategies for effective intervention and assessment are covered, including videotaped group discussions.
