A Multimodal Diagnostic and Treatment Model is described that reflects the assumption that most symptom presentations, regardless of their aberrant nature, are functional in that these reflect contemporary psychological and biomedical features of the person as these interact within a physical and social environmental context. Diagnostic activities identify instigating and maintaining factors contributing to aberrant symptoms or symptom clusters. Diagnostically-derived psychosocial interventions are selected to provide alternative pro-social coping skills as functional replacements for the psychiatric symptoms.
