Effective work with people who have both mental retardation and chemical dependency requires a new understanding of goals and modalities. The goals of treatment, the tools and modalities used for treatment and the focus of treatment are all different from traditional programs. The goals of treatment must be changed from achieving understanding, insight and acceptance to developing a routine of living that supports abstinence. The tools are specific behavioral interventions aimed at creating a pattern of abstinence. The focus of treatment is the patient, persistent training of the client with cognitive disabilities to live an abstinent life.
