Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) remain conspicuously absent from Psychiatry's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). However, the behavioral and learning sequelae of FAS and FAE are often profound and interfere prominently with daily functioning throughout life. As a result, the effects of prenatal alcohol use in those with whom we work and/or live often goes unrecognized. Persons are often misdiagnosed, frequently labeled as having disorders such as Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD and Intermittent Explosive Disorder, leading to inaccurate treatment. This workshop will examine the behavioral manifestations of persons with FAS and FAE and will highlight appropriate treatment approaches for each age group, from children to adults.
