Participants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are the most prevalent individuals receiving services at PATH Intl. Member Centers. This course contains a wealth of information about ASD, how the disorder may impact participants involved in EAAT programs and includes a feature presentation by a physician with the University of Colorado School of Medicine Children's Hospital, Colorado.
As a result of this course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize key characteristics of ASD and associated comorbidities
2. Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques for children and adults with ASD
3. Describe and implement behavior management strategies within the scope of a PATH Intl. Credentialed Professional’s role in EAAT
Course Length and Schedule:
This is an asynchronous, three-week long course. The course will require approximately four to six hours of work per week, including reading provided materials, viewing presentations, engaging in online discussion forums and submitting assignments. Assignment deadlines will be spread throughout the week and students should expect to access the course three to four times per week.
You are expected to attend and actively participate in each of the outlined activities in order to receive credit for the course. There are no live or synchronous activities in this course; all coursework is done on your own time, following the deadlines provided.
PATH Intl. Credentialed Professionals (riding instructors and equine-specialists in mental health and learning), PATH Intl. Instructors-in-Training, EAAT program volunteers, etc.

Continuing Education for PATH Intl. Credentialed Professionals:
This course will provide six hours of disability education and six hours of continuing education hours toward an annual PATH Intl. Instructor Compliance. This is 12 hours total of continuing education hours.
Full course refunds are given only if a written cancelation request is received at the PATH Intl. office one week prior to the course start date. A 50-percent refund is given if a written request is received at the PATH Intl. office two to six days prior to the start of the course. No refunds will be provided once a course begins. If extenuating circumstances prevent a course participant from beginning or completing a course (family or medical emergency, natural disaster), a written request for a refund must be submitted to the PATH Intl. office prior to the completion of the course session.
Required reading assignments have been compiled and are used throughout the course. You are expected to read the required resources prior to completing assignments. Additional optional resources may also be provided at the discretion of individual course instructors.

-Our learning management system (LMS) is CourseWebs. To access the LMS, you will need an internet connection and an internet browser with a flash player enabled.
In addition, it is helpful to have knowledge to:
-Create and save MS Word documents
-Find basic resources on the internet
-Create and organize files & folders on your computer
-Send, receive and manage email
