April 16, 2019

Today most communication is done through text messaging and Smartphone apps. This is a convenient and fun way to stay in touch, but what does it mean for our privacy? Cell phone providers and social media companies use the metadata and contents of our messages to provide targeted ads and build profiles of us based on our location, interests, and contacts. This webinar will provide tips on ways to communication with your friends, family, and colleagues while maintaining your privacy.

Learning Objectives:

Understand what data is shared when sending text messages (SMS)
Know which popular messaging services are encrypted and which are not
Know how to use and install Signal

Presenter: Josh Stone
Josh Stone is the Director of Digital Services for SEFLIN. Josh has over a decade of experience teaching technology courses to patrons and library staff. He is a graduate of the inaugural cohort of the Library Freedom Institute, a partnership between New York University and the Library Freedom Project to set up a network of online privacy advocates and trainers.
