Shared Decision Making SIG: May Meeting
Speaker: Anne Stiggelbout, Leiden University, Netherlands
Research has shown many barriers to Shared Decision Making (SDM), both on the side of the clinician, the patient and the system. Most support has been aimed the first two, e.g. training and decision aids.
Barriers at the level of the organization of care should not be underestimated. Care paths are often complex to navigate for patients, which may lead to feelings of disempowerment. Clinical Practice Guidelines and Multi-disciplinary Team decision making are valuable to quality of care improvement, but may hinder SDM.
This talk will focus on improvement of (shared) decision making through interventions at this meso level, and may be of interest to clinicians, patients, researchers, guideline developers, as well as quality-of-care staff.
