Broadening the Community of Support:
Engaging Teachers in Child Mental Health
Using Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm
This program will introduce participants to the book Anxiety and Depression in the Classroom: A Teacher's Guide to Fostering Self-Regulation in Young Students. A didactic portion of the presentation will set the context of the need to address mental health in young children. Didactics will include information about the specific diagnoses of anxiety and depression. The framework of the book – looking at the diagnoses from a developmental and self-regulation lenses – will be discussed. A narrative component will discuss the process of creating the book. Finally, practical applications will be discussed, including actual practicing of some of the exercises included in the book.

Examine the different clinical presentations children struggling with these diagnoses may manifest, including due to diversity/cultural differences

Describe the critical need to incorporate mental health work into the training and practice of teachers

Nadja Reilly, PhD, is a clinical psychologist specializing in children, adolescents, and families. Dr. Reilly is the Associate Director of the Freedman Center for Child and Family Development at William James College, and the Director of Training for the Center’s field placements. Dr. Reilly is a core faculty member of the Clinical PsyD program, and faculty in the CFAR concentration. She is the editor of Preventing Depression: A Toolkit for Schools, co-editor of the How Not to Keep a Secret Curriculum, editor and principal author of the Break Free from Depression school curriculum, and executive producer of Break Free from Depression documentary. Dr. Reilly is the author of the book Anxiety and Depression in the Classroom: A Teacher's Guide to Fostering Self-Regulation in Young Students. Dr. Reilly has presented in numerous local and national conferences, and continues to promote awareness of child mental health through her teaching, research and practice.
