This
program will discuss multiple aspects of working with people with cancer and
their family members. From program development to peer consultation, this
program will discuss the basics of how to establish a program of support for
people with cancer and their family members. Modalities will include
individual, couples and family therapy as well as professionally facilitated
peer-led group support. Special focus will be given to highlighting and
discussing the impact of cancer disparities on people of color in these various
treatment modalities.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Explore how to effectively work
clinically with people with cancer and their family members in individual,
couples, family and group psychotherapy

Describe how to collaborate with
hospital professionals for referrals

Explore ways to pursue program
development of cancer support groups and individual, couples and family
psychotherapy with people with cancer and their family members

Discuss ways to promote effective
self-care in the face of emotionally difficult clinical work

Nancy Gaulin, Psy.D. MBA,
is a psychologist with a specialization in health psychology who has eleven
years of experience in the Greater Boston area. She has worked in hospital
inpatient and outpatient settings, community mental health and school settings
working with children and adults. Dr. Gaulin co-founded Facing Cancer Together
in February of 2009. She interned at The Wellness Community–Greater Boston
during her training and then became a group facilitator there after graduation.
She currently works as a staff clinician at McLean Hospital, group facilitator
at Facing Cancer Together and has a private practice in Belmont where she works
with people with cancer and their family members. Prior to entering the field
of psychology, Dr. Gaulin pursued a 20-year career in business in the financial
services sector in Boston and New York City.
Michele Lyons, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist and certified
health service provider who has six years of experience in the Greater Boston
area working at Child & Family Psychological Services, Inc. / Integrated
Behavioral Associates. She specializes in working with cancer patients,
survivors, and co-survivors. Dr. Lyons also has extensive experience working
with women with major medical difficulties, and women and adolescent girls with
mood disorders. Dr. Lyons has worked in hospital outpatient, community mental
health, and school settings with children, adolescents, and adults. In
addition, Dr. Lyons was a special education teacher.
Quinn Pertman, Psy.D., completed her Doctorate of
Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional
Psychology. In addition to working in
outpatient mental health settings, she has also worked with adult and pediatric
oncology patients in individual therapy, couples and family therapy, and group
therapy. She is currently a post doctoral fellow at Facing Cancer Together.
