Disasters in Special Populations

No one who sees a disaster is untouched by it. However, those considered special populations have additional stress factors, reactions, and impediments. People pull together during and after a disaster. Stress and grief are normal reactions to an abnormal situation (transitory reactions) and emotional reactions relate to problems of living. (abnormal and excessive disruptions to daily routines). Who are special populations? Children and youth, older adults, people with disabilities, people with serious mental illness, people with low socioeconomic status, disaster workers, and cultural and ethnic populations.

Learning objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Understand the difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary victims of disaster.
  2. Learn about Physical Reactions to a disasters
  3. Learn about emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to a disasters
  4. Be able to identify various special populations
  5. Understand cultural sensitivity and cultural competency in working with special populations.
  6. Better understand the guiding principles for cultural competence in disaster mental health programs

 

Upon completion of this course attendees will earn 3 Category I Contact Hours.

If a registrant cancels more than 10 days before the event, a refund will be issued by check or credit back to your credit card, minus a 10% administrative fee.

 

If cancelation occurs less than 10 days prior to the event, no refund will be issued but you may request a credit towards a future training to be used within 1 year of the cancelation date. Call the Chapter Office (804-204-1339) to cancel within 10 days of the training. A request for credit may be granted at the discretion of the Executive Director in case of a documented emergency.

 

DISABILITY ASSISTANCE/SPECIAL NEEDS

Children under the age of 18 are not permitted into any NASWVA sponsored trainings or events, without prior written consent by the chapter. For special situations and/or circumstances, please call or email the chapter office.
