Dr. Roger Pulwarty

Dr. Roger S. Pulwarty is the Senior Advisor for Climate, and the Director of the U.S. National Integrated Drought Information System at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado and Washington DC. Roger is from Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr. Pulwartly's research and publications have focused on climate, impacts assessment, and adaptation in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. He has developed several internationally recognized efforts that form the basis for sustained collaboration between scientists and the broader society.

He is a lead author on a number of national and international climate assessment reports. These include the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Global Assessment of Disasters (2011), the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 Fourth Assessment and 2012 Special Report on Extremes. He is a Convening Lead Author on the 2014 IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (on Adaptation Planning and Implementation). The IPCC was the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. Pulwarty has acted in advisory capacities on climate, natural resources and disaster risk reduction to several national and international agencies including CARICOM, the governments of Fiji, Portugal, Venezuela, Chile, the Organization of American States, the UNDP, UNEP, World Meteorological Organization, and the InterAmerican Development and World Banks. His work has been featured in several media communications, including the New York Times and the BBC.

Roger has served on science advisory committees of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and has provided invited testimonies before the U.S. Congress, on climate, adaptation, and natural resources. Roger lectures at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill and at the University of Colorado. He is a co-recipient of the 2008 NOAA Administrator's award, the 2010 Department of Commerce Gold Medal, for outstanding achievements in integrating scientific research into public decision-making, and the 2013 Gold Medal for Excellence in Applied Science and Technology from the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST) of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
