Our tour guides are Doug Walter and Barbara Stocklin-Steely.
Doug Walter is a Denver architect who has specialized in residential remodeling since 1979, during which time he has completed over 500 projects and won 130 local and national design awards. He is an active member of NAHB, AIA, NKBA, ICC, and IES.
He wrote a monthly column , “Drawing Board”, for Remodeling magazine for 7 years, and is currently a frequent contributor to Professional Remodeler. His illustrated articles touch on common design and construction challenges from the field. He also speaks to national conferences like this one on Additions, Historic Preservation, Aging in Place, Kitchens & Baths, and Lighting & Daylighting.
With extensive experience in historic preservation, Doug was selected by the mayor to serve on the Denver Landmarks Preservation Commission, where he helped finalize Denver’s new Design Guidelines for rehabilitation, additions, or infill in Denver’s 51 historic districts. Doug has a knack in his talks and writings for taking complex topics and making them easy to understand and apply.
Barbara Stocklin-Steely is Principal Planner - Historic Preservation with the Community Planning & Development department at the City of Denver. Barbara coordinates the review of applications for historic districts and individual structures, and forwarding recommendations to the Denver City Council. In the process, she shares her expertise and resources with property owners and developers on design review and state income tax credits.
In a partnership with Historic Denver, Inc. Barbara also works to raise awareness about historic preservation, and promote public pride and awareness to encourage a culture of reinvestment.
