W9: Sinus Augmentation: Current and Future Trends - SOLD OUT
(Event: 65th AAID Annual Conference 2016)

Oct 28, 2016 1:30pm - Oct 28, 2016 5:29pm
Session Type: Workshop
Track: AGD Subject Code 691

Description

Patients with an edentulous posterior maxillary segment frequently lack adequate bone mass to support dental implants. The challenge of bone augmentation of this segment has been traditionally addressed by two approaches: lateral maxillary window (hinge osteotomy) and the crestal (osteotome technique). The latter strategy yields modest bone height increments, hence is not suitable for patients with markedly reduced initial bone height. To reduce patient’s trauma, minimally-invasive procedures had evolved to achieve successful outcomes without reducing procedure success. A new minimally-invasive technique now available is a modification of the crestal approach, in which antralmembrane elevation is executed via the osteotomy site using a dedicated balloon. The minimally-invasive approach, together with use of ultrasonic bone surgery, can diminish post-operative complications while reducing operator’s chair time. This workshop will describe state-of-the-art sinus augmentation and will provide hands-on practice of the various techniques on specific models.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Recognize the mechanism and basic principles behind the lateral and crestal sinus lift technique
2. Determine appropriate graft materials for optimal outcome
3. Interpret the benefits and limitations of piezoelectric surgery in sinus augmentation
4. Comprehend pros and cons of this minimally-invasive crestal sinus lift
5. Explain various clinical applications of a bioactive clot produced from the patient’s own blood in sinus augmentation
6. Predict how to manage intraoperative and postoperative complications
