Employment: Proper Classification of Workers – Avoiding Potential Pitfalls in a Tight Labor Market

With the ongoing labor shortage, businesses may be tempted to explore alternative worker arrangements, such as engaging independent contractors. This session will cover the complex landscape of worker classification rules at the state, federal, and local levels. Gain valuable insights from recent litigation, specifically examining how these rules are affected during changes in administration.

Speaker: Trina Chernos (Trina.Chernos@ci.stpaul.mn.us )

In August 2022, Trina Chernos joined the Saint Paul City Attorney’s Office as its Deputy City Attorney for the Civil Division. Prior to her role with Saint Paul, Trina was an Assistant Minneapolis City Attorney for 15 years, specializing in labor and employment law. Trina is also a qualified Rule 114 Neutral and Minnesota State Bar Association certified Labor and Employment Law Specialist. She serves on the certification board. In addition to advice matters, Trina represented Minneapolis at grievance arbitrations, administrative hearings and consulted on litigation. Prior to joining the Saint Paul and Minneapolis City Attorney Offices, Trina was in private practice and clerked for a Hennepin County District Court judge.
