This year marks 25 years since the publication of the 1^st edition of Miller & Rollnick’s Motivational Interviewing.  During this quarter century, MI has quietly revolutionized not only the field of addictions treatment but, in many ways, the way we go about having helpful conversations about change with people in all professional venues.  This workshop will provide both an overview of the foundational principle and practices of motivational interviewing as well as a review of the evolution of MI.  In particular, we will look at current developments in our understanding of the technical component of Motivational Interviewing, and how these have advanced the clinical practice of MI. Finally, we will look at the evidence base to discern both the promises and the limitations of this approach to the facilitation of change.

Specific learning objectives:

• Report 3 key principles each of the relational and technical components of MI

• Use reflective statements to acknowledge an understanding of the client’s discordance

• Describe the differential use of the decisional matrix under conditions of equipoise versus preferential direction of change

• Describe the process of formulating and executing intentional actions, and linguistic markers of such.

• Identify change talk in free flowing discourse

• Describe 3 strategies for structured elicitation of change talk

• Demonstrate the “elicit-provide-elicit” format for information exchange and shared decision making

• Report on the evidence base and also the limitations of MI with respect to health behavior change within the primary care medical practice.

Gary S. Rose, PhD, is a member of the Core Faculty, Department of Clinical Psychology, William James College; an Adjunct Professor, Brown University School of Public Health; and, since 1998, a member of MINT, the international organization of MI trainers.  For the last 20 years, Dr. Rose has been practicing, teaching, and conducting research on motivational interviewing and related approaches to health behavior change, and lectures widely on motivational enhancement and behavior change, both in the US and overseas. Dr. Rose has served as a co-investigator, consultant, and trainer on a variety of randomized clinical trials studying the application of motivational interviewing to health care, addictions, and psychosocial rehabilitation. His current research efforts are focused on developing cost-effective MI-consistent interventions and training methods for health care practitioners.
