Humanistic Psychology Lecture Series

William James College is excited to announce the third lecture in the continuing lecture series that focuses on the current role of Humanistic Psychology in the context of the continually changing dynamics within the field of psychology and mental health practice. While evidence based treatments and behavioral protocols have come to prominence in recent years, humanistic psychology remains at the core of the human transaction and process that is psychotherapy. This lecture series aims to bring esteemed colleagues from around the country whose primary focus is on the humanistic perspective in psychotherapy to help articulate why this perspective remains so vital and necessary in contemporary clinical practice.

The Use of the Interactive Field between the Therapist and Patient

Dr. Joseph Cambray will be giving the third lecture of the Humanistic Psychology lecture series entitled The Use of the Interactive Field between the Therapist and Patient.  The interactive field describes the subtle and complex ways in which the therapist and patient mutually influence each other through unconscious or subliminal interactions. Dr. Cambray has focused much of his research and writing on these “moments of meeting”, especially related to the therapeutic process itself. Dr. Bob Childs will interview Dr. Cambray to explore what happens at this level of the therapeutic endeavor and to attempt to help clinicians learn how to work with the interactive field. The audience will be invited to ask questions.

• Discuss the Jungian understanding of transference and countertransference experience as it related to the interactive field.

• Describe how to develop awareness of countertransference experience as it relates to the interactive field

• Examine the Jungian understanding of the nature of the Interactive field

Joseph Cambray, PhD, is the Provost for Pacifica Graduate Institute. He is Past-President of the International Association for Analytical Psychology; has served as the U.S. Editor for The Journal of Analytical Psychology and is on various editorial boards He was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, Center for Psychoanalytic Studies; and former President of the C.G. Jung Institute of Boston. Dr. Cambray is a Jungian analyst now living in the Santa Barbara area of California. His numerous publications include the book based on his Fay Lectures: Synchronicity: Nature and Psyche in an Interconnected Universe and a volume edited with Linda Carter, Analytical Psychology: Contemporary Perspectives in Jungian Psychology. He has published numerous papers in a range of international journals.
