Motivational Interviewing Basics for Healthcare Professionals AND Smoking Cessation, the Stages of Change, and Motivational Interviewing - a follow up workshop.

 

Part 1: Motivational Interviewing Basics for Healthcare Professionals 3.75hrs

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence based clinical tool used to help people make decisions about change.  Improving one’s health often requires individuals to make significant behavioral change. Despite the obvious health benefits of change, it’s common for people to experience ambivalence and hesitation.  This course will provide an overview of the theory, skills, and practice of Motivational Interviewing. Health care professionals can learn how to apply Motivational Interviewing to engage patients in making their own arguments for change and also their own plans for their health.

Overall goal: Participants will have a basic understanding of motivational interviewing and be able to apply techniques.

 

By the end of this interactive course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define Motivational Interviewing
  2. Understand the need for Motivational Interviewing in healthcare
  3. Understand and identify client language as types of change talk
  4. Understand how reflections and questions are used to guide clients towards change talk
  5. Demonstrate ability to use Motivational Interviewing through role-play exercises

Part 2: Smoking Cessation, the Stages of Change, and Motivational Interviewing.  A follow up workshop. 3.75hrs

Participants must have completed Motivational Interviewing for Healthcare professionals.

Smoking is one of the most difficult habits to change. This workshop will articulate challenges patients face when considering smoking cessation. Participants will be able to assess a patients’ readiness for change using the Trans-theoretical model of change and apply motivational interviewing to facilitate smoking cessation.   

Objectives:

  1. Understand the need for smoking cessation
  2. Understand one’s role in having smoking cessation conversations with patients
  3. Define the Trans-theoretical Model (TTM) of Change
  4. Understand and Identify the 6 stages of the TTM
  5. Understand and apply Motivational Interviewing in smoking cessation conversations

Each workshop qualifies for 3.75 Category I Continuing Education hours. Attending both Part 1 and Part 2 qualifies for 7.5 Category I Continuing Education hours.

Check-In begins at 7:30am. Please arrive no later than 7:45am to sign in. The training begins at 8:00am and ends at 12:00pm.

Part 2 - Smoking Cessation, the Stages of Change, and Motivational Interviewing. A follow up workshop.
Check-In begins at 12:30pm. Please arrive no later than 12:45pm to sign in. The training begins at 1:00pm and ends at 5:00pm.

Participants must have completed Motivational Interviewing for Healthcare Professionals to attend Smoking Cessation, the Stages of Change, and Motivational Interviewing. NASW members who attend both parts will receive a 10% discount on registration fees. Nonmembers who attend both parts will receive a 5% discount on registration fees.

  • NASW Members - $113 (includes 10% discount for attending both sessions)

If a registrant cancels more than 10 days before the event, a refund will be issued by check or credit back to your credit card, minus a 10% administrative fee.

 

If cancelation occurs less than 10 days prior to the event, no refund will be issued but you may request a credit towards a future training to be used within 1 year of the cancelation date. Call the Chapter Office (804-204-1339) to cancel within 10 days of the training. A request for credit may be granted at the discretion of the Executive Director in case of a documented emergency.
