Event Description

NOVEMBER 12, 2021 | 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM Eastern | VIRTUAL

Cost: $15 students*, $22 professors and staff (please note we expect this event to sell out, so register early!)

NCPH and IUPUI will be co-hosting our biennial Careers in History Symposium this November! Originally slated for last year but rescheduled due to COVID-19, we’re excited to come together once more (this time in a virtual space) to connect undergraduate and graduate students with history professionals representing the broad scope and range of the public history field. In a series of morning breakout sessions and an afternoon keynote, students will learn more about the job possibilities that build off their scholarly and professional interests and leave with resources and personal contacts to call upon in considering their future. Besides specific history/public history career information, we will offer fresh perspectives on the many ways in which professional historians, curators, archivists and librarians, preservationists, government agencies, and businesses collaborate to put history to work in the world.

To preserve the regional focus of the in-person event, this virtual event will initially be open to students at all levels, faculty, and staff from a six-state range near our host institution IUPUI: Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky. if spots remain, we’ll open registration to all students regardless of geographical location about 2-3 weeks prior to the event.

SCHEDULE

See the list of scheduled participants for each breakout at https://ncph.org/conference/2021-careers-in-history-symposium/. Times listed are in Eastern time.

9:30 am  Welcome

In the first half of the day, registrants will have the opportunity to hear about the career paths of panelists from several public history disciplines in three rounds. The first round will be an orientation round, and in the second two rounds registrants will choose one of two options to learn more about specific areas of work. When you register we'll ask you to let us know what breakout you're thinking of attending; this choice isn't binding, but it will give us a sense of numbers!

9:45 – 10:15       Morning Breakout, Round One: Orientation Round (all)

10:25 – 10:55     Morning Breakout, Round Two | Pick one: Museums OR Archives

11:05 – 11:35     Morning Breakout, Round Three | Pick one: Government OR Consulting

12:00 pm            Break

1:00 pm             Keynote Address | Noelle Trent, Director of Interpretation, Collections, and Education at the National Civil Rights Museum
Keynote sponsored by the Organization of American Historians

2:00 pm             Afternoon Breakout

In this last set of breakouts, registrants will choose which to attend based on their current status – undergraduate students thinking about what comes next; students in or about to enter graduate school; and those preparing to enter the job market. Again, when you register we'll ask you to let us know what breakout you're thinking of attending, but this choice isn't binding!

Breakout 1—What do I do after college?
For undergraduates considering whether to pursue a higher degree or look for a job following graduation.

Breakout 2—How do I make the most out of grad school?
For those currently pursuing a graduate degree.

Breakout 3—How do I transition out of grad school?
For those in grad school (or recently graduated) and ready to apply for jobs.
