Blockchain: It Isn't Just for Bitcoin

Blockchain is the underlying technology use for Bitcoin, a digital currency that is getting a lot of press. Blockchain, however, provides us with more possibilities than just currency. Because of its structure, it is one of the most secure processes available and is being considered for use in the areas of medicine, copyright registration, supply chain management, provenance, and yes - libraries.

We will discuss what blockchain is, how it is used in Bitcoin and other non-financial services, and consider its advantages and disadvantages.

Learning Objectives: 

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how blockchain works
  • Identify at least 2 advantages and disadvantages for using blockchain
  • Discuss at least 1 possible use within libraries and information management
