State Relations Task Force Lunch-and-Learn

Oct 24, 2017 12:00pm -
Oct 24, 2017 01:30pm

Event Description

Instead of the regular task force call this month, come learn about fertility preservation (sometimes referred to as “egg freezing”) and the state of state policy around this issue. Why? Though fertility preservation entered the popular discourse when Silicon Valley firms started offering it to employees, the issue is now gaining attention of state policymakers around the country, in part because of efforts by organizations like Critical Mass: The Young Adult Cancer Alliance.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that each year nearly one-quarter (133,000) of all new cancer diagnoses will impact men and women of reproductive age. Nearly half of adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer are told by their doctors that their treatments can cause infertility. As part of their advocacy for cancer patients and survivors ages 15-39, Critical Mass is tackling the barriers that this group faces when it comes to fertility preservation and family building.

Kate Houghton, President and CEO of Critical Mass, will discuss the state policy landscape around fertility preservation, and share her own battle stories and best practices from a few states in the last legislative session.
